ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a designer working in architecture. A black architectural designer. A blended title that
exists in roughly 1.6% of the architecture population. But what is the reason I explored this
medium? To respond to my underlying creative passion for design? Perhaps. However, this is
followed by a bigger picture. To cultivate and foster the acquired knowledge and passion to
develop and enrich communities. Black communities.
Throughout my studies and practice, I have developed a keen sense in human emotions.
Acquiring a vast taste of what it was like to feel others shoes. Strengthening my approach to the
arts. Clarifying my existence. Summarized into storytelling. I am a storyteller. Each medium
I explore has a cross disciplinary approach that tells a story from beginning to end. So, I
approached this ability and translated it onto screen.
Film. “Take the Front Seat” is my first film. I’ve waited a few years to develop my first film
because I wanted to depict and challenge the notions of ideas and spirituality that has inspired
my outlook on life, along as others. When I approach the film, I use architectural ways of
thinking; researching the history, acquiring successful details from the past and merge them into
the current function of the built environment. The film had a similar approach. To dive deep
into the flesh of black history and pull significant events that translate into the times we live in
now. The idea was to not make another new film. The idea was to create something that would
make others recognize the numerous ties from historical events to modern day life, which
makes the messages more powerful.
‘Take The Front Seat’ is a compilation of interviews, film clips, recordings, and music videos
sequenced into a collection of happenings and experiences in the black culture. Throughout the
film, these bits and pieces explore the impression left by the feet of black people and follow its
trail of events through love, expression, pain, anger and most importantly, remaining true.
It is and will always be my goal to cater to the hearts of the people, while always being aware of
the feeling. To feel is to live. To live is to be aware. Take the front seat.
